Moss Glen Falls Mountain-Granville VT-May 14, 2023
Total Mileage: 6.2 Miles
Total Elevation Gain: 1578 Feet
I wanted to do a hike that was not too long but was a peak on one of my higher priority lists. Since this one was relatively close to home, I thought it would be perfect.
Moss Glen Falls Mountain is a mountain in Granville, Vermont. It is on the New England 3000 Footers List.
I drove down through Granville Notch and started driving up toward the trailhead for the Clark Brook Trail. The road was rutted and relatively washed out. I planned to drive up Patterson Brook Road and then begin the bushwhack. However, Patterson Brook Road was gated at its intersection with West Hill Road. The gate said that it was supposed to be opened by the end of April but the town or whoever operates it had probably not gotten to it yet. I started the mile road walk up towards the start of the bushwhack. This road was in far better condition than the West Hill Road which had been washed out. At the first hairpin turn in the road, I jumped into the woods and began to sidehill around the south ridge getting closer to the mountain. I passed through maple stands and finally went up steeply to the ridge. I followed the ridge over many various sub-peaks covered in spruce before making a final ascent to the summit. The summit had a small open clearing but the register jar was about a hundred feet southwest of this clearing in a spruce grove. I signed the register and looked through the names and found that no one had climbed the peak in almost three years! I took a bit of a break at the summit before turning around and heading down.

The view towards Mount Roosevelt?
The small clearing just before the summit. Probably browsed by the moose in the winter.

We followed the ridgeline for longer on the way down and at the end of it, dropped off into a wide basin that was very steep at first. We bushwhacked through thicker brush to get back to the road but we emerged in the same spot we went in. We walked out the road and to the car parked across from the gate ending the days hike.

All in all a very good hike. We did not find the best lines to gain and drop off the ridge up and down but it was fine. The weather was very nice making for views through the trees which are just starting to bud. I did get scratched up as I was wearing shorts but just a few minor scrapes from the brush. We were hiking for about three and a half hours. We figured out that Moss Glen Falls Mountain did have a namesake and we decided to go check it out. It was pretty cool and here is the pic! Happy Hiking!
